HI, I bought the VGN-A115M yesterday and was shocked to see I had 2 hard drives showing in My Computer, each aprox 29gb each.
I had a look in Device Manager where only 1 hard drive is shown, the Hitachi DK23FA-60, leading me to beleive that the drive is partitioned.
Drive C contains the Windows installation and program folders for everything else that is installed. Drive D, the second partition contains an empty folder called SonicStage and within that another empty folder called Packages:
D:\SonicStage\Packages
Is there any reason for this partitioning (if it is a partition) and is it ok for me to use a utility such as Partition Magic to merge the partitions?
Many Thanks in advance
my vaio has two drives, one for programs the other for music files , I use it for recording hours of music from the net
The usual reason for this is that if Windows has it's own partition it goes a bit quicker. The tendency is to put programs on the other partition, and use the Windows one for storage while trying to retain a fair bit of space. You can merge the partitions if you like, but having 2 comes in handy quite often and there isn't any real difference. Although it does irritate me that Windows defragmenter won't recognise a partition as one HD despite the fact Windows put it that way.
It takes some getting used to if you don't like change  but my advice is to keep it that way, not that it makes a vast amount of difference.
VAIOs have one physical drive split into two.
It's very common.
thanks for the replies
I was wondering what was going on as I havent bought a laptop or pre-built computer with a drive that has been partitioned 50-50
thanks again
[edit] DOH! if only there was a search on this forum i might have seen a similar thread in the 'Want to buy my first Vaio' board lol
Its a handy feature, I was glad to see Sony do that.
