My brand new battery is not recognised

Hi, I have a VGN-C2S I have just bought a new battery for it as the previous was getting so old I could hardly get it across the room to the next socket.

Now I have replaced the battery the machine will not power up unless I remove the battery first and although the charging light flashes when its plugged in and turned off, when I hold the curser over the battery symbol (botton right) i get the message '0% available (plugged in not charging)'.

Any suggestions / light shed upon this would be greatly appreciated.

Is the battery a genuine Sony replacement?

Many batteries advertised on the web or eBay are not compatible (even though they sway they are). The Vaio runs a test on the battery every time you start the Vaio and unless they pass this test they are not recognised.
