Battery drain when laptop switched off

Any ideas what could be causing my VAIO battery to drain whilst the laptop is switched off? Something is causing a fairly large drain, I lose about 20% overnight and the whole thing is dead in a week. It isn't the battery, when I remove it from the laptop it doesn't drain. Laptop out of warranty (just) - any ideas???
Could it be the wifi?

I have this problem with a new VGN-FZ21Z and reading through the posts here, have to assume the only solution is yours and sell it on ebay "caveat emptor"  :smileygrin: 
 
Which model did you find doesn't have this problem?
 
I can't find any info on ones that do and don't auto-drain.  Makes sense, like a car whose fuel evaporates while parked!  Would be hard to sell those models!

I've got the NR21Z now, no issues.

I have the same problem. Obviosly it´s a systematic factory fault. That Sony doesn´t replace or repair it is unnaceptable and in contradiction of the warranty.

My father has one of those Mac laptops and doesn´t even shut it down: just puts it into hibernate. It makes me envious because my laptop might as well not have a battery: loses 20% every night and when on batt power runs down in about an hour. The result is I always seem to have almost no battery.

I´m contacting Sony support today and I won´t take any crap from them. I cannot afford to buy a new laptop.

Good luck but don't hold your breath, I've yet to hear about anyone that has either found the solution or worse still, that Sony has 'fessed up to the design defect, let alone compensated or fixed it.

Hi everyone with the 'battery discharges when turned off syndrome'.

I do not have the problem so I can't experiment. Can one of you try something for me?

1. Charge your battery to 100%.
2. In Task Manager, kill the Sony process ISBMGR.EXE
3. Now close down your Vaio
4. Leave the battery inserted and leave for a few days before checking if the battery has drained when the Vaio is turned off.

I have heard that shutting down ISBMGR.EXE before you shut down the Vaio prevents any battery drain when turned off.

Surely Sony Research & Development must be aware of this?
Nothing is being done & a Google on this process - Sony battery management & checking for a non sony battery.
As an end user this is terrible, especially if this causes bad battery drain when switched off.

Tried this on my VGN-FZ21Z and it it makes no difference at all to the battery drain nor the amount/time.

Hi I just purchased a Vaio FW11E and noticed the power drain on the laptop after a coupe of days of testing I have had the batter exchanged from the supplier thinking it was the battery. I will now test with the batter taken out.

Just to refresh this post.....

Has Sony got a fix for this yet??

I have also the same kind of problems with my new vaio (VGN-FW21Z). Battery power drops significantly when the laptop is switched off and in addition, every restart "costs" 5-7% of power. Isn't it about time Sony did something about this issue? This is not a drop of power that can be consider as reasonable.
