Thanks, I know this is a fix rather than a cure but it really helped me out today
I've sent my z3c to sevice on 26 september for same problem and they confirmed that is a hardware problem and not software...Anyway my z3c was unable to fix and dunno why but 2 days ago i recived the new sony x compact instead and i accepted the deal.So for u guys hurry up to send the phone in service if its still under the warranty because no software update will repair ur phones! Good luck all
Same issue here...it's clear software problem!!! I sent it to service and tell me touchscreen problem(150euro). They looking for idiots!!!
I ve only waiting for update or root the phone... This is SONY support!!! NEVER Sony products again
Hi all !
I began experiencing this problem some days ago.
I spent some time online and found something that did the trick for me.
When you go through the update process, it's mandatory to do a factory reset.
If not, there is a bug affecting the marshmallow update process so the phone think
you are always achieving the setup wizard, and try to keep the softkeys off.
FIRST:
-> swipe the notification bar and press your user account icon.
-> press on the "Guest" icon to enable someone to use your phone (desktop change to it's default settings)
-> swipe the notification bar again, press user account icon and press your user icon (Host) to come back to your session.
-> Now, the softkeys are working (for me indeed)!
SECOND: if you can use adb, do a :
adb shell am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivit
Click through the wizard and the issue will disappear.
see ya (and sorry for my bad language...)
PS: I've tried to force_close and disable some process running in applications in relation with I told.
I've disabled "Configuration assistant" or something like this in english and "configuration guide".
My softkeys are working wonderfully well...
I've had the exact same issue as everyone here but was lucky enough that my phone was still under warranty.
I sent it in to the repair centre (third party, non-Sony) and got a new/refurbished phone back a couple of weeks later which works perfectly.
Not a lot of info on the repair document unfortunately, but it's nice to have a working phone back again

Just to add that you have another customer experiencing this problem: Android 6.0.1 Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (4 months old) Symptoms: No notifications (email, text, calls) Only the virtual back button is working Quick settings (swipe from top) not working This happened following a software update last night.
Really?
Just 4 months in use and got the problem already? Very doubtful it has to do with the hardware if it is that new, right?
Thanks for sharing, that is good to know, because I have been wondering how new units are faring.
Sorry, - it is a Z5 Compact
Tried noursbleu's FIRST option of creating Guest account - didn't work on my phone
