Vaio A497XP - Problems with DVD-RW Drive....

Hi,

Can anyone please help?

Just using DVD Shrink to back up a couple of DVD's and I get an error when it is reading it. Works OK on other computers.

The 2 DVD's are a little scratched, and this appears to be the problem. It appears that the SOny drive is very temprimental, and simply will not read them using Shrink, Clone etc.

Anyone else had this, and got round it???

Thanks very much.

Hi GE90,

Chances are that your model comes with the DW-D56A optical drive – not good news! This drive is known to be extremely temperamental and, judging from the experiences of other unfortunate users of this drive, it will possibly fail completely in the not too distant future.

You could try a disk copy of the scratched CD’s but I fear that it is the drive not the media. If your notebook is still in warranty I suggest that you contact Sony support.:smileysad:

Thats the one!!!
Would Sony change it do you think? It is under 1 year old!:smileysad:

Yes, get in touch with Sony immediately and report the problem. There have been countless Club Vaio members that have had problems with this drive and Zina has had more problems than most. Type DW-D56A into the search facility on this forum and all will be revealed….

Thanks Rich.

Has anyone managed to get a permanent fix under warranty?
Is there a modified drive available?

Thanks very much.

I believe they are replacing the faulty DW-D56A drives with another make.

Someone once told me to put my DVD disks in the fridge so the plastic expands into the holes... not sure if it works LOL

It looks like it needs to go back for a new drive!

Do I need to remove all of my software first?

I am not convinced that a new drive will fix it, looking at other threads.....???

Any advice appreciated.

Tony.

Blencogo

Do you know how I can have it replaced with the new make drive?

Thanks

I think they have had to replace so many DW-D56A drives, they have exhausted the world supply!!

I think they are replacing these drives with Matshita UJ-831Da.

Have a look at THIS THREAD

For further info perhaps you need to post a reply on the above thread for the attention of Zina and Sebby - an update would be useful!
