My VAIO has lost my Drive F:

Hello,

I am sorry to bother you here, but I need help on something very serious.
In trying to transfer data from my old PC to my new Vaio laptop I established
a home network connection.

So far so good.

Everything went dandy and perfect.

Now, I wanted to re-transfer that data on Blu-Ray discs, and surprise,
my drive F:, which was normally supposed to be the Blu-Ray burner/reader
is completely missing.

Not even the drive port can be opened.

I had a CD inside and I had to force it open with a pin and remove the CD.

What can I do?

I would really appreciate any help and assistance in this matter.

Since the Vaio came without installer disks, and my system restore DVDs are
worthless without a functioning DVD drive, I have no clue on how to proceed
here.

Please help! Thank you in advance...

Cordially

Patrick

Hi Patrick and welcome.

Check the status of your drive in Device Manager. Find your drive under DVD/CD-ROM Drives.

Is there a yellow warning triangle next to the drive? Double-click on the drive and look at the status. Does it say that the drive is working properly or is there an Error Code shown?

Hi Blencogo,

there is no mention what-so-ever of the Drive.

That's the point.

One moment it was there, the next it was gone...

I must add that I was doing a Home Network data transfer, from an old and slow Win 98SE PC.
What happened during this data transfer is that the Vaio went suddenly blank.

Black screen and all, but did not shutdown.
It was just sitting there, doing nothing.

Then, after about a minute or two, it came back as if nothing had happened.

Completed the data transfer, I wanted to proceed to burn it onto a Blu-Ray disc, and that's when I noticed that F: (which stands for my Blu-Ray DVD drive) had completely disappeared.

Also, the tray can only be opened by inserting a pin through the safety hole, otherwise it wouldn't budge.

Anyway, I will take it to the local Sony Store and see what they can do with it, or if it has to be replaced altogether.

It is amazing though, because I have already burned various DVDs on it and I did buy the Vaio just two months ago.

We are truly starting on the right foot here...

I don't like this one bit.

Thanks Blencogo.

You may comment on this anyway. I am eager to see your reaction.

I think it is best to contact Sony support.

If the drive is missing from Device Manager altogether then that usually points at a hardware problem - most likely a poor connection to the drive.
