My new Sony Vaio P11ZR/R is driving me MAD! I don't use it very much but whenever I switch it on, it takes the next few hours TRYING to download updates (to date of which there are 23!).
It's powered by a T-Mobile SIM which doesn't appear strong enough to maintain momentum for these downloads, and it keeps losing its internet connection.
It keeps telling me the PC is at risk because the anti-virus is out of date.
I tried to download AVG because it's free, but that failed three times. Then I bought an ant-virus but couldn't get that to download either, so managed to get a refund.
I pestered and pestered for this damn thing, and got it for a present, so mustn't be ungrateful.
I would sell it, but I've entered into a two-year contract with T-mobile for the wireless broadband.
Could someone help me........PLEEEEEEASE!
Seems to be a T-Mobile issue.
I suggest you to find a Wireless Internet access nearby and update the notebook first because a WLAN is faster and more stable than 3G.
Thank you for your reply.
I have a home computer on broadband. Is there any way I can utilise this?
I am very annoyed with myself that I entered into a two-year contract with T-Mobile.
Does anyone know of any cases where people have successfully cancelled?
Seems you don't have any WLAN at home. Unfortunately due to the size of P11ZR it doesn't have an integrated RJ-45 port (LAN).
So the solutions are:
- Find a friend who have a Wireless Internet connection and go to his place an update the notebook.
- If your broadband modem is USB, try to connect and install the modem on the P11ZR and updates the notebook.
- If not, buy the external adapter from Sony with the LAN port (I think it cost around 50£) and connect it directly on your broadband connection. (sometimes requires you to restart your modem)
About the T-Mobile contract, since I'm not in UK, I don't know. I guess you have to ask them.
You always can tell them that the reception in your place is very bad as the reason to cancel your contract.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP. Would a wireless router for the home only help?
Just one more question.......can you recommend a decent anti-virus?
If the free ones are rubbish, I don't mind paying!

You'll be getting sick of me!
I am glad to say that everything is getting much clearer (with your help, of course).
I HAVE AN RJ-45 PORT REPLICATOR/DOCKING STATION (I just wasn't sure what it was!).
So, would I unplug my main computer from the modem and attach my notebook?
