How can I use the full speed potential of a high speed external USB hard drive for my GRX616SP with WLAN connection?
Situation: as far as I know, a separate USB card will have to be bought in order to increase the speed of the regular USB link (with ordinary speed). This card cannot be used in conjunction with the WLAN card, originally delivered with the GRX616SP. Both cards constrict each other.
I have a GRX616SP and keep the WiFi card in all the time - it's silver and says "SONY" [:">]
I notice that you couldn't fit 2 cards like this as the end of the card overlaps above the slot
although a 'normal' PCI card should fit. What type of card is the second one you are using?
Dave, thanks a lot for your fast information!
The first card may be the same card as yours - it's silver and says "Sony". The second one - the USB card for high speed connection, which I did not bought yet - is thicker at its end, so it's overlapping with the Sony WLAN card. This thicker USB card is the only one I have seen here in Germany so far.
Do you know specific models of the USB card which will solve my problem?
Kind regards
topspeed
Ho Topspeed,
Sorry I don't, you could try using the iLink port, although that would be a little more complicted to setup - haven't even used mine at all yet [:">]
As a matter of interest, which external HDD have you gone for? I was thinking of getting one myself to save transferring files between machines all the time.
Also, call me nosy
, what do you think of the GRX?
Using iLink would depend on the hard disk, whether it supports FireWire / USB2
Dave, thanx!
I have bought a TrekStor mobile 80 GB HDD, it's super slim (size 128 x x 78 x 16 mm), with a leather bag, and I don't have any problems with it.
My overall impression of the GRX is quite OK. When I bought it, it had been State-of-the-Art (size of screen and HDD, DVD+/- -drive), although the weight of the machine is too big. I bought it to substitute my desk computer, and this is quite OK.
Meanwhile I am thinking in investing some money in an additional laptop, only for music (storing all my CDs and working with itunes from Apple) and for the living room, I am thinking about one of the beautiful Samsung models.

Hi Ralf
TrekStor? Don't know them
Although 80GB would suit me fine. Want somewhere to backup all the pictures I've taken over the last 3 years of my children - currently around 9,000! How does yours connect - USB (via PCI) or iLink?
I know what you mean about the weight, the GRX is a great piece of kit but thankfully I don't have to carry it around too much - just to and from the car
Samsung make some good looking stuff but IMHO Sony is still the best - for looks, kudos and power. Even the Samsung M30, which seems to be similar to the GRX61616SP, has only 512MB RAM. I have no real need for 1GB but it is nice to have it nonetheless :smileynerd:
Yep the GRX is very heavy when carrying it around. I don't carry mine around much due to the size of it.
