Installed and had working a Dratek wirelass lan card in vaio fx101 for around a year. laptop lost half it's memory, both memory slots in use, now, I've known 3 fx101's do this and it's been the second slot in each case that has poor soldering. After resoldering each pin including those not loose, and I can solder down to 0.5mm pitch tsop's by hand, the PCMCIA slots no longer see the wireless lan card, power LED not coming ON, card is OK in other laptop. Before I resort to stripping the 101 down, does anyone know if the PCMCIA slots are protected by surface mount fuses. Soldering iron was earthed and I used 3m scotch anti static kit. Have done full restore just in case od some strange lockout by OS, running win ME as supplied with fx101.
Fixed it!.
The pcmcia slots on the fx101 and likely other FX's of same breeding, do not directly connected to the motherboard.
After removing the power on/off - speaker panel, removed the keyboard and saw that the pcmcia connector is plugged into the motherboard via a pcb edge connector, it had partially come out.
Hope this is of use for others that have had pcmcia problems as I've seen a few forums where users report totally dead pcmcia card.
