Battery overheating causes not charging issue

Hello,

My phone's battery overheats more often each day and because of that, when I plug the charger, it keeps discharging, at this point I have to turn off the device, take out the battery, wait for it to cool down and then re assemble it and plug the charger again.

Did my battery reach its limit?. What can cause this effect?. Does overcharge cause this kind of malfunctions?. Do I have to buy a new battery or a new phone perhaps?

Thanks

the older a battery is the less it will retain it's charge, and yes heat does has an impact on battery life, the hotter it is the faster it will drain
