TalkTalk/Tiscali iPlayer issues on Blu-ray

The BBC iPlayer has been given an overhaul. The problem is that the new interface gives a "not enough memory" error - and we're now unable to use the iPlayer.

It's a problem that has also been registered by others at the BBC's iPlayer forum.

Can we rewind to the old interface please ?

My iPlayer connection came back to life a few days ago - I've waited until now before posting this message just to make sure that the fix was not temporary.

Many thanks to Catmambo and all those others who have been responsible for getting this sorted.

It's been a frustrating few weeks but I'm pleased that it's working and I'm once again happy to recommend the S370.

Common problem Mark. See thread here - https://www.sony.co.uk/discussions/thread/112657?tstart=30

If you are with Virgin as you're ISP, I posted a "workaround" by setting a proxy server on the BBC iPlayer forum - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/NF13735683?thread=7907457

That lets the "bigscreen" interface load rather than the full website page which crashes as there's not enough memory in the player to handle it.

I have streaming issues (especially with HD) as do others - https://www.sony.co.uk/discussions/thread/112657?tstart=30

Thanks. I'm with Talk Talk (nee Tiscali) - I'll see if that fix is relevant to our ISP. I spotted the other thread too late. I'd searched forum with wrong keywords. I'll join that thread if there's more I can contribute.

I've assumed my HD streaming is because the typical speed I get is 6Mbit, but that drops in the evening so the programs don't stream in SD at that point.

Also with Talk Talk

Any chance of a fix for this Sony or Beeb?

Here is a trimmed down temporary fix I developed on the other thread.. the fix is not as long winded as it used to be..

1) Turn off your bluray / device

2) Go to your computer, and go to your broadband's access page.  If it's Tiscali (where most of the problems are) and you have a Thomson router, it will be http://192.168.1.254

3) Where it says "broadband connection" click "disconnect"

4) Wait a few secs, then click "connect"

5) Go back and switch your player back on.  After the player has reconnected to the internet with a new IP address, Iplayer should now work.

6) If this doesn't work first time, repeat till it does.

The problem seems to be with certain Tiscali (but not just Tiscali) IP addresses.  It could be working fine for ages - then the network goes down, comes back on, gives you a "bad" IP address, and the problem occurs. Going through this procedure, you may pick up another "bad" address.. keep trying till you get a "good" one.

Don't hold your breath for Sony to find a solution.  They said on the other thread they see it as Tiscali's problem and will not act - this despite the fact the problem is not replicated by other browsers (PC, Wii) on the same network.  When people like myself lose patience and suggest spreading the word through bad reviews, and taking the problem higher up, posts are deleted and threads are locked.. despite the massive help they give to the problem Sony refuses to face.

Edit: By the way, it's probably got nothing to do with any BBC "overhaul".  There is a theory changes made around xmas caused buffering problems, but the "not enough memory" problem has been around since October, possibly beyond.

I notice that the other thread has been locked........by Sony perhaps, not liking the comments?

I have had enough now and have put this review on Amazon, with 1 star

I bought this before Christmas...great delivery as ever, easy to set up, but I do have a Sony TV.......great picure quality when playing Bluray and DVDs. Be aware though, if you use Tiscali/Talk Talk to get your internet, you will not be able to view Iplayer. Sony are blaming the BBC and Tiscali, but it is basically is their fault as their browser doesn't work. I have never got it working yet, hence the 1 star as it is heavily advertised as having this functionality. So if you are getting it for only Bluray...buy it is good,  but if you have Tiscali and want BBC iplayer...avoid like the plague until Sony sort it out.

That work around has never worked for me unfortunately.....so BBC iPlayer still eludes me!

Hi - I posted the original post. I still have this problem with iplayer - I have a BD570, 732 Sony TV and Tiscali ISP. I am very disappointed that Sony has not helped us with this much, having sold us something with iplayer on the box. Everything else works fine. Paul's workaround has worked for some, and I have have found that sometimes after several iterations round the "not enough memory" loop it suddenly decides to work for no apparent reason. It also tends to work in the mornings but rarely in the evenings. I am still hoping Sony will give us a better workaround, even explain why its happening and maybe give us an update to fix the problem. Other manufacturers of Blu ray players, Wiis etc seem to have coped much better. So, come on Sony, you can do it!

Hi All

Just a quick note to say, Sony is still investigating this issue, with the ISP's involved and the BBC.

Just because the iPlayer works on another device, does not mean the product has a fault, each device has a unique header profile, to tell the BBC what interface to load, the interface is not stored on your player, somewhere outside the control of the player this is going wrong for a very small amount of customers, this is making even more difficult to replicate, however we are doing everything we can to help the ISP's and the BBC to find the cause, when this is identified, we will update all customers who have contacted Sony Customer Information.

We are sorry there is no new news,  as you can see from paulgrecothomp post above it can be resolved by resetting your routers IP, this should not be required and helps show the issue is not the player.   Please keep an eye out for updates or register you issue and details with Customer Information.   Thank you

We are not suggsting that the individual boxes are faulty, the fact that the other services work prove that not to be the case.

What we are saying that is that the software in box is inherently flawed we cannot access iPlayer using one of the major ISPs in the country.  I am sure this issue could be fixed by Sony by issuing a new software release that means we can then access the server.  I am also sure that Tiscali or the BBC could also resolve it, but I didn't subscribe to Tiscali to access iPlayer as major reason for the subscription, likewise, the BBC are under no obligation to get it working with your box, but I bought YOUR equipment, to access iPlayer. After all, your packaging comes with with BBC iPlayer emblazed upon the box and is advertised as being accessible. To my knowledge, there was no mention (even in small print) that it warns, incompatible with Tiscali/TalkTalk, though I am happy to be given evidence to the contrary.

For these reasons, I still feel Sony should be the ones taking the responsibility on this......even if you are on the phone to Tiscali and the BBC hassling them daily to get it resolved, this has gone on for months now.

Just a quick extra point here, the rerouter setting method has never worked for me, so please don't assume this work around works for all, it doesn't.

Finally, do have any comment as to why the other thread was locked? I'd be interested to hear the reasons behind it.

Hi All,

My ISP is TelecomPlus (Utility Warehouse) and I have the same problems connecting to the BBC iPlayer as the Tiscali/TalkTalk users. Like the rest of you I am now sick of this issue.

I installed the latest internet software update on the player yesterday in the hope that it would incorporate a fix, but no joy. I still get the “not enough memory” error message. Surely, after so many months of this problem being known about, Sony should have come up with a solution by now.

And if Sony are having such a problem replicating the fault at their own offices then they are more than welcome to come round to my house and see it for themselves.

I bought my Blu-ray player primarily for the BBC iPlayer function as I don't possess any Blu-ray discs and I already have a decent DVD player. The BDP-S370 was marketed as being able to access the iPlayer and no exceptions or qualifications were listed in the advertising or on the box.

It is not fit for purpose, I'm sorry to say.
