Sony DAV-DZ630

I've got the above surround sound system, and trying to get sound from other things isn't gonna work 'cos it has no digital optical.

Rather than buying a whole new system, cos I'm tight and I like my current speakers, can I just change the DVD unit to another sony model that does have a digital audio? Will all my speakers still connect the same way? Even better, can anyone tell me which model could be used as a straight swap?

Much thanks!

Hi,

im afraid your pretty much stuck with what you have there as the unit is a combination job and one part is not much good without the other, if you got another player you will still need a separate amp, and even then only if the sub woofer is an active one, as i believe the one you have is passive.

theres no real way round this unless your prepared to spend some cash on a serious upgrade.

If I upgraded, the most important parts are the dvd player combo job, and the amp yes? I could still use my current speakers with the new unit?

Hi again,

im not one that likes being put on the spot so i will say as is, you need a new player, a digital A/V amp (one with switchable impedance) as i dont know if your speakers are 4 ohms or 8 ohms, output wattage is fine.

the sub woofer you need to check if its active you will be ok, if its passive you will be looking at another sub.

anything you do or modify will be at your own risk. hope this helps.

So, a new player, AV receiver and a new sub (I'm pretty sure mine is passive)

I'd be better off buying a new surround system and speaker kit. Am I right in thinking that if I got another system, say pretty much the same as what I have but with a digital audio on the player, my ps3 and xbox would play with the surround sound 'cos they're connected throught the TV? Fella in the shop told me that. If they we connected to the TV, and I connected the TV to the player by digital audio, then everything connected to the TV would work in surround sound.

Sorry for my ramblings, I'm really confused by this stuff. Thanks alot for your help.

Hi again,

no need to apologise, now i have an idea what equipment you have here are my thoughts, forget a dvd player, you have the PS3 for that, i dont know if you have sky or virgin media or just freeview but thats not a problem,

you could get something like the Sony STR-DH810 A/V reciever and you can connect the xbox and PS3 via HDMI through the amp to your tv.

you could use all the speakers you already have except the sub woofer as you would need an active sub for that, so technically all you need is the amp and a sub and your covered.

try Richer Sounds or even Amazon for these, furthermore if you dont want to split the DAV kit up then flog it and buy the speakers as you go along if you cant do it all in one hit.

Hi again,

well i did say something like the 810 but me being me always aim too high, lol.

the 520 will be perfect for you and yes you can connect the Wii using the component cable connected to the input on the amp then you will need another component from the amp to the tv and that should do it, unless i missed something!

incidentally Richer Sounds do this amp with 5 year supercare warranty for £164.90

go ahead, treat yourself.

Sorry for being so vague. I only have freeview, which is built into the TV.

That looks a serious bit of kit, with a price to match. In all honesty, I'd never get even half way near that receivers potential.

I was looking more along the lines of a Onkyo TX-SR309B, or a Sony STRDH520

..the price is a bit more friendly. Haha.

I'm not looking to spend a shed-load really, I was hoping to keep it as budget as possible (hench me asking to swap dvd systems).

I'm not too fussy about splitting this DAV kit up, because the speakers are actually really really good. Plus the fact the wife is happy with how they fit in with the 'decor' of the room. Haha.

I just need to research subs now. What's your opinion on the the AV receiver I mentioned?

Also, just another thought I had was the wifes Wii. This doesn't have HDMI, so would it work in the surround sound if I connected the AV to the TV using the digital audio?

Thanks so much!

Execellent! Everything is sounding so much better now.

My last question, to seal the deal, is regarding my speakers if you don't mind. I was told on another forum that my speakers wont work because they're low impedence? Is this not an issue now that I'll have the receiver and active amp?

Hi again,

we covered this in my second answer, you need to check the back of the reciever for a switch that will change the (impedance) between 4 or 8 ohms, as i have said i have no idea which your speaker you have are, my str-db830 has it, then once you have checked your speakers just make sure the switch is in the right position,i dont believe later amps still have this function and if not you most likely end up changing speakers as well.

your last line should be A/V reciever and Active Sub!.
