Hi,
I have a Samsung UE55D8000 3D ready TV and an ageing Denon AVR-3805 AV receiver (which was high-end when I bought it, but lacks an HDMI connection). I am considering buying the Sony BDP-S780 blue-Ray player, which I intend to connect directly to my TV via a 1.4 HDMI lead (for 3D movies). However, I am unable to connect the BDP-S780 to my AV receiver by HDMI, and so would need to use a separate connection to the AV receiver for the sound. My AV receiver has inputs for optical, coax, component or composite, which I am able to connect to the BDP-S780, but would any of these connections (or a combination of) provide me with 7.1 surround sound? The AV receiver has 7.1 surround. Would I be able to achieve lossless sound, or what is the best sound scenario that I would be able to achieve with the BDP-S780?
Many thanks in advance for any advice.
Dave O.

Hi,
get a quality coax lead (QED) or (IXOS) or similar and connect the blu ray player to the reciever, i dont know on yours if you can do this ( i can on my Sony) select Auto format decode and see if that works for you.
Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Dave-o,
forgot to mention, when you do that dont forget to go into the 780's menu set up/ audio settings, and set Dolby Digital (coaxial to DD), DTS to DTS.
Purchased a new S780 yesterday to upgrade an existing S360 - which has been working fine outputting dolby Digital via the Digital Out socket to a Denon AV1 amp (pre-HDMI model). HDMI output connects via a switch box to a Themescene HD87 projector. Everything worked fine, but no LoveFilm - hence the £199 upgrade to a multi-region S780 from Sevenoaks.
Today, new S780 directly replacing the S360 and all I can het to work properly on the sound setup is Stereo. Using DTS or DD I lose virtually all of the centre channel although the other channels "appear" correct. Anyone got any suggestions? I have already tried all the combinations I can jiggle on the S780 sound setup page 😞 Think this S780 may be going back to Sevenoaks.
Hi,
sounds to me like its set to downmix to stereo, go into audio set up and double check its set to Dolby Digital to Dolby Digital and DTS to DTS, oh and dont forget Dolby Digital (coaxial/optical) output to Dolby Digital, Downmix set to surround and see how that goes.
