Sony BDP-S480, only part of picture on screen.

Hi, i have just bought a blu-ray BDP-S480. When i try to play a blu-ray disc the screen only shows the middle of the picture in a square in the centre of the screen the rest of the screen is black. I am able to get the main menu on disc but my options are at the bottom of the screen. I am then able to guess where the start film option is. I can press enter to start the film and the sound is ok but i do not get afull screen or picture. Just a small square in the centre of the screen showing just the middle portion of the picture.

Can anyone help please?

Hello irawilki

Thank you for posting your question @ Sony Forum

The problem is related to adjusting of scence mode (screen size) for both TV and BD . By doing the correct setting i believe you will get perfect picture

Please check page number 21 in BD manual under screen setting . This will do the job

http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4261096111.pdf

IF needed, Do the same with your TV menu by changing the scene mode ( let us know the TV model number for further assistant)

Hi,

go to set up in blu ray player menu, click screen settings, scroll down to screen size, click that and change to your tv screen size, check also tv type is at 16:9, others include screen format- original, DVDaspect ratio- letterbox and you will be fine.

Hi, still no joy.

everything was set up as you recommended. tried it on another TV and same problem. This player replaced the BDP-S370 because i thought it was faulty. The blu-ray disc/film (brand new) will play fine on ps3 and samsung blu-ray.

Hi, still no joy.

Once the blu-ray disc is loaded i will get a full screen picture for about 1-2 seconds and then i will get the main menu screen by which time the image is now near the centre of the screen. The picture does not appear to be scaled down in size. It is as if i had a full picture and someone has put a black card over the screen with a small rectangle or square cut out somewhere near the middle of the screen. That is the portion of the picture i am able to see. If the menu options are on the bottom of the screen i an unable to see them but i can guess where the start film option is and start the film but it is only viewable with this black image with the square cut out in the middle.

I originally had the sony BDP-S370 and problem started when the disc was first inserted (brand new disc),  I took the player back and got the BDP-S480 - same problem. The disc plays ok on other players i.e, ps3 and a samsung blu-ray.

The player is connected to a samsung UE46C6620 TV via sony STR-DH820 receiver. It has also been connected direct to TV also direct to a smaller LG TV and same problem.

The disc/film has also been replaced for new.

regards

Hi again,

what i dont get is that this is happening on both blu ray players you have/had, yet it all works if you use the PS3 !, that suggest to me that there is something you have missed in the set up of both players, i have sat here going through my s570 to see what it could be and i cannot see it, if i was sitting in your chair i would probably find it but i cant sitting here!, i would strongly suggest you go through it all again.

when you use the PS3 are you using the same cables or the ones for the PS3?,

try swapping cables around as well particularly the one connected to the blu ray player.

the answer is staring at us there somewhere, just gotta find it.

Hi again and thanks for your time,

The ps3 belongs to the same friend of mine that has the samsung player. I personally have never used one.

Everything is hooked up via hdmi leads.

What puzzles me is that on start up i will get a picture for 1-2 seconds and then the viewing area reduces to the middle of the screen. The sound seems ok. Once the film has started i can do all other functions on the player i.e. ffw, rw, pause. but all with a reduced viewing area

Hi again,

did you say you had connected the player direct to the tv ( no amp) ?, something is doing some switching there, so without the Amp in the line does the player work or not?

Hello irawilki,

I hope you are doing well.

Kindly let us review step by step what set-up are there until we may catch the problem. speciall the settings mentioned in page 21 in the manual (link above) . Could you tell what are current setting for each item listed there?

In addition, there are some settings in the page 22 (top left quarter)

I believe the problem may be located within those settings

Regards

Hi,

The blu-ray is usually connected via the receiver, but even if i connect it direct to the tv it still does the same thing. i have also connected it direct to another tv in the house and get the same problem. This is only happening with a blu-ray disc not a dvd if that helps.
