I've been trying to tune my RDR-HXD1095 to the new Irish digital channels. Managed to pick them up but can't see the picture on the TV. Audio and guide info is perfect. Has anyone managed to get the saorview tuned? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
I'm not from Ireland so I don't know which type of channel you are looking for, but from the synptom it seems like you're trying to view HD channel, that the HXD recorder is not able to decode (just audio no video...).
Saorview uses a different video system to Freeview. The Sony product probably doesn't have the required video decoder included,
Saorview uses MPEG4 whereas Freeview is on MPEG2. New televisions come with MPEG4 tuners but there are no DVD recorders with MPEG4 tuners. To receive Saorview on older televisions, you will need a set top box which converts the signal (see www.saorview.ie for more info). Without this, you will get sound but no picture. Similarly for DVD recorders, a STB is needed. I use a Walker STB which outputs to the Sony recorder. The recorder tuner is redundant I'm afraid. Would be good if they came out with a recorder without the tuner as a cheaper alternative.
PS. Be careful to go for a Saorview approved STB. RTE2 is broadcast in HD only and SD STBs will not receive this.
