RDR-HXD870 - USBA doesn't work

I've tried connecting 4 different USB devices (2 different memory sticks & 2 different mp3 players) to listen to music.  The power indicator on the device lights, but  I get the message "this function cannot be used at this time".

Any suggestions for getting things to work?

The USB is for listening or copying of MP3 audio tracks or connecting a digital camera to view or copy JPEG images.
