New BDV-E370 won't play DVDs

Out of the box system will play BD's no problem on an HD projector, but when DVDs put in projector displays "Out of Range" then looses HDMI connectivity. Presumably becuase it is not getting a signal from the Sony player.

Any ideas?

Ian

Hi,

DVD copies should play fine, its not that, check the region on your DVD's anything other than region 2 or region free (0) will not play unless you have had the DVD side of the player unlocked to multi-region

Yes, I tried an original copy of Watchmen and can hear but not see it.

Will try another one tonight.

Yes it was a R2 DVD (although I was somewhat surprised that the player was region locked as I thought all players these days were Region free like the DMTECH one I have. But perhaps it is only smaller manufacturers who do that).

I'm going to try several tests to find out what is causing the problem (BR player or projector):

1) Connect a different BR player (DMTECH multi-region BR player) to the HDMI connection to see if able to view DVD

2) Connect a different video source (HDMI fitted PC monitor) to the Sony player to see if able to view DVD

That should narrow down the suspects to only 1! Then I can work on finding out why the DVD video is not being viewed, whilst the BR video is.

thats absolutely correct!, its a process of elimination!, my money is on a setting issue, good luck.

No need to try something else, You are using a projector not a TV panel, Blu-ray frame refresh rate 24fps , but DVD is higher , this is why you got -Out of Range- message

Could you check your projector manual how to control the refresh rate

I guess so

Aren't frame rate and refresh rate 2 different things?

Connected an HDMI monitor and it shows the picture fine.

The projector manufacturer says that the refresh rate cannot be changed on it, thus is must be done from the Sony player. I will connect my laptop which has HDMI on it to see how that looks on the projector.

Someone also posted somewhere that changing the player from PAL to NTSC on a different model player fixed a similar (projector) problem, but I can't see how to do this in any of the Sony menus.

I checked the Sony the menus again, and found these settings which may be the cause (resolution which is also different to frame/refresh rate I believe):

x [Output Video Format]

[HDMI]: Normally select [Auto]. Select

[Original Resolution] to output the resolution

recorded on the disc. (When the resolution is

lower than SD resolution, it is scaled up to SD

resolution.)

[Component Video]: Select the resolution that

suits your TV.

[Video]: Automatically sets the lowest

resolution.

Note

• When connecting the HDMI OUT jack and other

video output jacks at the same time, select

[Component Video].

• If no picture appears when setting [HDMI] or

[Component Video] resolution, try another resolution

setting.

x [BD/DVD-ROM 1080/24p Output]

[Auto]: Outputs 1920 × 1080p/24 Hz video

signals only when connecting a 1080/24pcompatible TV using the HDMI OUT jack.

[Off]: Select this when your TV is not

compatible with 1080/24p video signals

From what I gather if the player was connected to a TV it would change the resolution automatically, but because it is a projector it cannot detect this and needs changing manually perhaps?

Hi,

seems we are running round in circles!, can you re check output from your player is set to Auto, and did you say projector is connected via HDMI ?, check also in screen settings see what screen format is set to (mines on original) and if using HDMI output video format is on Auto and YCbCr/RGB (HDMI) set on Auto.

i dont get why you can play Blu Ray ok and not DVD, really odd that.
