For antitheft you don't quite need an antivirus, just set up a pin or password lock or use My Xperia or Android Device Manager
1. MyXperia
or
2. Android Device Manager
www.google.com/android/devicemanager
your phone has to be
*On
*Data or WiFI on
*your Gmail should be present
*GPS has to be on
You can
1. track your phone
2. lock it
3. delete it

This is a complicated question, I don't use antivirus apps as they create issues with other apps and/or connectivity issues, slow down your phone and drain your battery, if you decide not to use an antivirus app just make sure to download apps from the play store and double check the reviews

Hi,
Just like uliwooly said, an antivirus program can sometimes affect the performance of the phone. The best antivirus is you, by not pressing untrusted links/pop ups and make sure that you download apps from a trusted source (Google Play Store) and you should do fine without an antivirus app.
