That seems really strange. if you disconnect the box, does the same thing happen?

Hi Leemonjazz,
Just to eliminate any HDMI CEC glitches, try either disabling Bravia Sync from the external inputs menu on the TV or disconnect the Virgin box's HDMI cable from the back of the TV, test it, and let us know the outcome.
