Connecting HDD to Sony XE90 TV via router

Hello,

I have a XE90 sony tv and also an Asus RT-AC87u router. Do you know if it possible to connect a external HDD to the router (USB 3.0 Port) and access the content through the TV ? (movies, photos, etc. )

Hi @danny_c_19  Out of curiosity I just connected a Sony USB HDD to my Router. As a media server it works fine for music, video and pictures without any problems on my XE9305 and X8305C. You know of course you that you cannot use it for recording etc. from the TV and only use it as a shared media server.

Hi, thanks for your reply. so you can confirm that the TV can see the data on the HDD which is connected to your router?

My goal is only to watch my movies directly on the TV, without using a laptop. I am currently using PLEX but for that i have to always keep the laptop on. So, i am not interested in recording.

Also i was thinking to a Westerd Digital Passport HDD. Do you know if this works only with a Sony HDD?

Thanks!

Hi @danny_c_19. It should work with any make of usb HDD or memory stick. Only media files supported by your TV, not data.

I try same thing with my laptop on same network to play movies from TV. My TV is 49XE8005, TV and C are on same network. I made a folder on PC, activated it share option and also enabled network share from advanced sharing settings on my windows 10 PC.

But I can't connect to that folder from PC.

Do you know any guideline for that process?

Also can you tell me How can I do that above router Hdd share?

Hi,

I am not sure if it possible to share a folder in windows across the network and access it from TV. I recommend using the PLEX application if you want to access data (movies, photos, music) from your PC - PLEX is free of charge if you don't go premium.

Also, what i am trying to do, is connecting a HDD directly to the router through the USB port. And access it with a PC and also with the TV. According to the comment from above this should be possible. I will come back with a feedback once I have tested this.

Hi @nohackmove

Unfortunately life is not that simple. It is not a case of simply creating a shared folder on your Win 10 PC. You need to set up media streaming sharing on your PC and specifically allow your TV to access it. Try Googling Media streaming on Windows 10. (image below). Once set up your TV will see ALL your media files.

Note, memory stick or HDD connected by USB on a router. You may have to Map a network drive to load media files on it. Right click Network in File Explorer and select Map network drive. The folder will be \\192.168.x.x\  where 192.168.x.x is the IP address of your Router. Then click on Browse ... and choose the root folder. I recommend creating folders for each type of media, Music, Video and Pictures.

Hello,

I have managed to connect my HDD on the router and then access the movies from the TV.
Do you know if I can use the srt file which comes with the movie?

I am not able to see it in the subtitles list.

The srt has the same name as the movie.

Thanks!

I would suggest to use Kodi (from the Google Play store). After configuration it will play everything with the added bonus of a great interface.

As far as the Asus is concerned:
