BBC iplayer on Android XE9005 now working with UHD and HLG HDR (sort of)

All,

For information there is a Planet Earth UHD HLG test video on the Beta iplayer which appears to work with the Android TVs. (Tested on my XE9005). Its pretty short but looks amazing. It was playing FA cup test loop video which didn't look as good and kept dropping out.

The FA Cup one just fails after about 5 seconds on my TV. Hardwired ethernet. Odd that the Planet Earth loop is fine....

Check it out.

I have the latest firmware and it says 2016... unless some new firmware appeared over the last couple of weeks?  Which model is yours, @stormyuk?  Mine's an 49XE9005...

Scrap that, I've just seen there's a new update available...

My version says:

4.6.110.1

Interestingly it says it was updated 31st May. Odd.

Same version here.

Also noted that on my XE9005 the info shown against the "Device:" label is "SONY TV 2016 HIGHED YOUVIEW".

That's weird as mine say's 'SONY TV 2017 HIGHEND YOUVIEW'. Its interesting that it appears any TV which is 2017 is not on the Sony list. There are however Android TVs with Youview from 2016 and 2018 on the list.

Maybe if yours is saying 2016 it will work speedy!

Apparently the latest firmware changes the DEVICE ID from 2016 to 2017 so its anyone's guess which is the best to go for....

Thanks @stormyuk I haven't updated yet to the most recent firmware. I can't be bothered to do it via the USB stick method, prefer to wait until it's available via the "OTA" update (I know it isn't really OTA but OTI...

According to a Sony rep in the local John Lewis, he told me in December 2017 that Sony would be making announcements about the XE range that would make them compatible before the BBC UHD trial broadcast of The Blue Planet II finished. Whoops! I didn't see that one coming....

I think that all bets are off for the XE range now other than perhaps for pre-recorded 4K material on iPlayer. It seems that the 2017 range just doesn't have the processor grunt to cope with live DVB-DASH HLG UHD TV :confounded:

My XE8007 was updated to the latest 6.5 software this morning. Netflix HDR now looks great. Shame there’s no content available on iPlayer.

I wouldn't hold my breath on it actually working, there should currently be beta videos available, and when the software was working in my OP here they were playable, now even though other devices can see these my XE9005 does not see them. My gut feeling is this is not fixed and if the BBC did a trial tomorrow, we would miss out again. 😞

Yes because someone in Sony needs to ask the BBC to re-test the latest software release against their test bed so that the sets can be added to the BBCs whitelist.

It does not look like that has happened :rage:
