2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

@rooobb It's not just that source, it does it with any source wether it is video played back from Android or from my HD DVR.

I've already tried messing with all the picture settings.

@TheLegendOfmart when I'm talking about the source I'm referring to the video itself not which way you played it: if the material is not pixellated, it won't show like this even with the worst monitor

You are probably watching YouView. How badly do you want programme reminders compared with having the ITV Hub and All 4 On Demand Players?

if your answer is 'badly enough to forego those two on demand players', go Settings, Channel Settings, YouView Settings, Disable.

Then you will be in the Freeview side of things, where you will find programme reminders work, but there is no ITV Hub, and no All 4.

Drains, isn't it, having to choose?

Thanks for the reply in regards to Daydresm.

In regards to spontaneous reboots when selecting the BT box, its not on my list to be looked at.  Are you able to reproduce this time and time again, or is it intermittent?

On saying that though, there is an issue where the tv reboots when 'zapping' which is being investigated.

The thing is, at this moment in time, the more people who can confirm an issue AND that it can be reproduced in  testing, the quicker the issue should be resolved.

Cheers

How do I get the PlayStation app / Sony Video Unlimited 4K app?

like the one on the FMP-X10 4K media server - Which actually lets you view the Sony 4K library

Does anyone know why the Sony Android TV can not offer the ITV Hub and All 4 On Demand if you have YouView disabled?  It seems a strange state of affairs when (and if) HDD recording arrives we will have to choose from either:

a)  YouView (with catch-up for all main channels);

b)  HDD, YouView disabled and only BBC and Channle 5 catch-up.

After all a £50 Kindle can work with all UK catch-up services!

Also is anyone getting 5.1 sound from the pre-installed Amazon Video app?  It works fine on Netflix and all other sources but seems to be disabled for some reason within the app for Amazon.

I'd welcome learning from others' experience and knoweldge on this.

I was wondering about the 4K app too. I emailed Sony a few times about it but got very stupid replies, such as, if the content is 4K then my TV will tell me the input is 4K. But they were stumped when I said the PlayStation video also only shows SD and HD purchase options. After looking online I found out that that's all it did.

Sony announced a new streaming service this year, I think it's called ultra. They announced it for their 2016 TV's, I should hope that it'll come to at least their 2015 models, it wouldn't make business sense for it not to.

Hi lgcebr.

If my memory serves me correctly, this was mentioned previously in this thread. Supposedly Amazon has had a 5.1 enabled version of the Sony Android app available for some while but it is Sony that are causing the mega delay. What is the point of having uber sexy 21st century 4K picture quality backed by wonderfully nostalgic 60s stereo sound?

It probably seemed like a good idea at the time, when YouView was coming on board with the ITV Hub and All4, that Sony did not need to negotiate for these separately, as YouView would make that unnecessary. And of course, as Sony should have had HDD recording from June 2015, there would have been plenty of time for YouView to likewise have HDD recording ready at its launch.

The reality has been rather different - the reaction to YouView has been lukewarm at best, and downright hostile, perhaps unsurprisingly, from satellite users who woke up to find their service and their tunings all gone, and needing hours to recreate, once they had figured out that you could indeed escape from YouView's tender embrace.

it is still an article of faith though, even now, that YouView will one day have HDD recording. And possibly that when HDD recording finally arrives, it won't be a choice of HDD or Satellite or YouView but never two together, let alone all three, as their respective footprints jostle for space in the limited memory of these sets.

Sony probably need a programmer from the sixties to come and teach them about overlays 🙂
