2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

@NPatri

It would be best asking Sony themselves. If you update with the TV with UK software you will have the BBC iplayer APP for instance. But you will not be able to use it because you are in a different geographical region which prevents access to BBCiPlayer.

Thanks for replying..! Well, I've already tried to contact Sony UK via email last week, still waiting for a response. If the only difference between two firmwares is just the Apps based on geographical position, I could easily stick with the UK version since I am already using a third party tool in order to be able to watch Netflix UK.

@NPatri

It could also affect digital TV channels as well, since Freeview is not available in Greece.

It pains me to do this as I've always enjoyed Sony products. However, after two months of living with this TV, I've frankly had enough. Below is a copy of the email I sent to Currys today. It may be of help as a template which others can use if/when returning their TV for a refund.

As some posters here have mentioned, the Sale of Goods Act was replaced by the Consumer Rights Act on 1st October 2015, so if you bought your TV after this date it might be worth checking the changes.

Email To: customer.services@currys.co.uk

Dear Sir,

Order number: xxx
Delivery reference: xxx

Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 I would like a refund for the Sony TV (KD55X8509C) I purchased on the 20th September 2015. This Sony BRAVIA TV is:

a) not as described – primarily due to lack of HDD recording. This HDD recording feature was advertised by Sony and also shown on your web site at the time of purchase, but the TV does not have this feature.

b) not of satisfactory quality (see reference below)

c) not fit for purpose (see reference below)

Reference:

Please can you authorise and arrange the return and refund of this TV at your earliest convenience.

Many thanks,

@Shalendran

I guess the set will have a UK firmware so I will check digital TV before upgrading. Thanks again...:smileyhappy:

So after getting no joy (or even useful information) from Sony support I eventually got currys to take back my TV (KD43X8039CSU) and refund me.  Initally Currys weren't keen especially as I purchased the TV in July and tried to insist that the missing functionallity would be added by Sony...

However I persisted along the lines of the suggested date for implementation of HDD being too late and also that there is no timescale or even plan to allow satellite functionallity to be used without disabling youview or vice versa.. and insisted on getting a refund in accordance to the SOGA

I also copied my communications to the SCCCustomerSolutionsTeam@knowhow.com address which seemed to illicit more of a response.

Anyway i picked up a sumsung ue40ju7000 to replace it.

Initial thoughts are:

The default pictures settings on the Samsung were awful (the really high levels of sharpening seemed to make everything look like a soap opera...)  I was quite concerned initially that I should have stuck with the Sony which had a beautiful image straight out of the box.  However after much playing with the picture settings the image is now as good as the sony had been.

The interface is much slicker and seems well much more finished... for example there is no interuption to the programme you are watching when you open the guide!

The smart control which bring up overlays of different functions in different areas of the screen works very nicely

HDD recording is there and works!

Other functionallity is there and works together, satellite tuners,  ITV player 4OD etc...

so far so good

recently made the switch to Samsung as well and picked up a UE48JU7000 after Richer Sounds agreed to a return of my KDL-43W755C. Obviously I've switched to a much more expensive set so you'd expect improvements.

The Tizen interface is so much better than sony's cobbled together combination of Android and YouView.

  • Everything is fast and fluid.
  • Recording works including timeshift.
  • FreeView TV guide is quick and responsive.
  • All catchup players present, all work well.
  • The included smart remote is excelent and very intuitive. It also has a learning function so you can teach it to control all manor of external devices.
  • PIP works well but I doubt i'll be using it.

Much like @rik_10 I wasn't happy with the Samsungs out of the box picture presets but after a little tinkering I'm very pleased. Also glad I made the jump to 4K.

Basically the Samsung feels like a finished product. Looking at the owners thread on AVFORUMs it's clear that Samsung have been very proactive at fixing issues and releasing updates. Fingers crossed it continues.

I new I'd miss some of the Android apps I was using such as Kodi so i've purchased an NVIDIA Shield Android TV in the Black Friday sales, ironic I know (£119.99). This is how Android TV should be implemented. If this hardware was in the Sony it would fly.

.....and if you put an Nvidia Shield into the Sony Android Tv's, they would cost an extra £200 each. That's like saying Microsoft should have put a GTX 960 in the Xbox One so it could actually output @1080p.

That's hardly a similar comparison. The shield has been selling for 119.99 over the black Friday weekend. What I'm really saying is that it's now very obvious to me that Sony's hardware is massively underpowered after experiencing the shield.

No it wouldn't at all for lots of reasons:

  1. £200 includes the retailer margin and distributer margin for a seperate product. There is no way Nvidia supply direct to customer, there will be a distributer in the middle that adds on cost.
  2. The Shield components would not be in addition to components already in the TV, i.e. the Tegra K1 would replace the woeful MediaTek SoC already in the set. Same with the PCB etc
  3. The overall Shield cost to the distributer will also cover the casing (already covered by the TV casing) and packaging (also already covered by the TV packaing).
  4. No need for the input/output ports that come on the Shield as again, they're already on the TV.

I'm sure the K1 costs more than the MediaTek SoC already in these sets but it wouldn't add £200, nowhere near.

All the same symptoms on my four week old Sony. KDL55W805CBU

Had the Sony App tell me they are working hard to solve the issues but why send out a TV that has these problems?

You dont buy a car for them to tell you later that the engine will only work with an update!

My review they askedme to do for the TV got thrown out too for telling the truth so I may as well put it on here.

"It is a nice looking TV with a great picture, even when in SD mode and the upscale on it is great. The screen is good with all colours and the blacks are actually black which is nice.

There are plenty of adjustments on it for the picture and in all I think this is probably the best TV picture I have seen in recent years.

The 3D is good with nice depth to it, but sadly you do not get any glasses and they cost £50 to buy and are hard to find, why not put this fact on the box that there are no glasses, such a disappointment, there is a bit of crossover too, maybe this can be sorted in a future update... how about it Sony?

It is a real shame that there is no 2D to 3D conversion on it too which was suggested on many sites when I looked to buy it, sadly I did not find out this until I tired. My Sony Blu-Ray player does allow that on DVD's and non 3D Blu-Ray discs and when in operation its looks okay, but it will not do it for live TV which is a bit of a downer.

It is sadly let down by the Android interface and is a bit sluggish in operation, sometimes taking 20 seconds or more to change channels which is not really acceptable for a modern TV, it makes you feel frustrated when you press the channel change and it sits there doing nothing.

At the moment it cannot record from YouView which has only just become operational from a recent update and this is disappointing, also there is no way to set the TV to record from a timer which again is disappointing, I hear that a future update is going to possibly bring this facility to the TV but we shall see.

The supplied free sound bar sadly blocks the remote control for the TV when placed in front of it, so that has gone to a different TV and I have put the TV through my surround systems which sounds fantastic.

The TV sound is okay but nothing to write home about though.

I am still getting used to the TV and find that I have to on quite a few occasions reboot it as it locks up, which is not very good considering Sony is supposed to be a premium brand, I realise that this is due to the operating system but its just not good enough really, I do wonder if the TV CPU is under powered and cannot cope, is this true Sony?

I am sure that updates to it will help out and I hope Sony continues to give updates for it and not leave it on the scrapheap when future updated models are released.

In all I am a bit disappointed in paying a grand on a TV that is clearly not ready for release.

Will I buy again from Sony I ask myself, if this experience is to go by probably not, unless of course the updates solve the problems this TV really suffers from?

Marks out of 10... sadly only a 4!

Sony you really need to do better.

The product is not really ready to sell in my opinion, as stated the interface is not up to scratch and there are too many missing features that could make this a great TV. Please sort out the TV and the interface and this will restore my faith in Sony products, until then I am sorry to say I will be wary of buying a premium brand like Sony is supposed to be."

So Sony, if you sell a TV with features then we expect them to be there when we buy it, not in a few  months time.

I am on the verge of returning it too, sick to death of pushing the off button for the sound to continue then eventually turn off then come back on again! I mean everything else electrical switches off so why cant you useless TV?

Dont think you would like to turn your car off then come back to find its been on all day as its switched itself back on and ran out of petrol, same with my TV, but its using my expensive electricity instead, are you going to pay for it Sony?

As for the YouView ,thats been disabled as its just does not work properly!

Come on Sony I thought the picture was brilliant and I bought it on that basis and also on the fact you could record onto a HDD, well thats not working is it?

Also I cant use my Freesat dish as if I did decide to use YouView it disables the inputs, what is going on there then, apparently it used to work?

I saw a great cartoon a couple of days ago about Apple updating a laptop with a man holding a screwdriver removing the USB port and he is saying "Just updating your laptop by remove the USB ports Sir" well is this not the same thing as you last update disables the satellite inputs, why are you doing that, stop taking things away that we paid for!

If this TV was working great then I might keep it, but at the moment its nearly going back under the SOG act "As not as described" and "Not fit for purpose".

I will see how the next update is,  but if it fails its going back and I will make sure all the Audio and TV magazines get to hear about it too, oh and thats not a threat by the way, it will be a promise.

Your choice Sony, employ decent coders or lose a lot of customers as you will soon be classed as a cheap brand that no one wants to touch.

Now I have to decide on where my 1k I am going to get back is going, and it wont be on any other Sony products ever...

Oh and if you ask for a review of the TV please use it as is, its not good just to pick the good ones and ditch the ones you dont like, in fact I think thats very misleading, about like your TV is.

Thank you for reading this and I expect it to dissappear as Sony dont want others to see what a bodge up they have made of this TV.

Oh and I have copied this so it will go elsewhere if its removed.
