Yes you can use external lights with the NEX-5N
Here's an example of an adaptor that can control studio lights wirelessly
http://www.scottlewisphotography.eu/?p=3168
with a list of supported flashes too at the bottom.

Hi thank you very much for your help. Can you use camera lights externally without a light meter or do you think they should be connected to the camera and a light meter used? I am hoping to so some location shots of beauty products. Thank you

You're welcome
I don't think this adapter supports TTL so you may be better with a light meter.
As its not Sony and I haven't used one, it may be best for you to get in touch
with the manufacturer just to check.
