Hi all,
I wanted to ask why do you think Sony is using gorilla glass instead of any better glass available on the market. Plus these are oleophobic too.
Since I read a lot about the scratches for 5th version of gorilla I ordered 9H tempered glass. It has only 2mm thickness but is almost indestructible and not possible to scratch. Then again, why Sony is using Gorilla Glass 5 which scratches easily instead of 9H?
To be honest I completely do not care about the "Gorilla Glass" branding and would prefer something different (Nillkin Amazing or whatever) that is 9H certified. They could even market it. So instead of buying additional protector we would have it out of the box.
Second thing is I wonder why noone is producing such glasses for the back (with potential hole for camera)?
Everywhere I can see such glasses (especially 2,5D or 3D) for the fron only.
Therefore, could Sony produce and sell such 9H glasses for the back of any Xperia devices made of glass like XZ Premium?
Can someone pass my message to Sony internally?
I would be interested in buying such instead of ugly cases. Maybe not only me.
We are not buying such nice devices to cover and hide it completely.
What is your opinion?
Thank you in advance.
it's easy to make shatter-proof glass or scratch-resistant glass. the problem is to make it both at the same time. scratch-resistant glass is very brittle and will shatter easily, and hard, shatter-proof glass is soft and will get scratched by relatively soft things. phone manufacturers usually opt for glass that's harder to shatter but slightly more prone to scratches because of it.
also, the 9H rating doesn't mean that it's "almost indestructible and not possible to scratch". I think you're confusing the rating with Mohs scale of mineral hardness. 9 on Mohs scale means that the material is as hard as sapphire and those 9H glass protectors definitely are not. I couldn't find much info about what the 9H stands for, although I've seen some claims that it refers to the scale used for rating pencil lead hardness (2B, HB and so on). and again, while the protector won't scratch as much as the phone's glass panel would, it's easier to shatter it than the phone's panel.
I'll also add that there are definitely glass protectors for back panels out there. perhaps there isn't one specifically for XZP yet, but I used to use one with my Z3 compact.
I would prefer to have scratch resistant glass being used by manufacturer than shatter proof. I doubt we cannot have both at the same time.
Also, I hope that 9H glass will be available for XZ Premium's back soon.
I had one for previous Z devices and there was no single scratch on it. I loved it!
See some videos on youtube about the tests for these glasses, you will see what it can survive 😛
If I am not mistaken the LG G6 has Gorilla Glass 3 on the front panel. Many complained that it was "old" technology. But the fact is that GG3 is harder and therefore more scratch resistant, but it will shatter easier. I have a few older phones with GG3 and they look like new. So far my Premium with GG5 is looking good on the front. I have it in a case so the back is OK also. I prefer GG3 because the chances of getting a scratch are far more likely than a complete shatter. I would love it if I could get a 9H screen however one minor drop and the screen would be toast so we have to compromise. I just wish we could get a good 9H glass screen protector for this phone.

which would make your screen much more prone to shatter when dropped than it is now. I dropped my previous phones multiple times and the screen never shattered, so I'm grateful for the current level of shatter-proofness, so to speak.
I doubt we cannot have both at the same time.
well, no OEM has made a phone with a glass panel like that, and I guess it's for a reason.

the general premise of the glass screen protectors is that 1. they prevent the phone from getting scratched, and 2. upon impact, the protector absorbs the energy and shatters instead of the phone's screen. so not only it's not shatter-proof, it's actually meant to shatter in certain circumstances. good luck using it for a phone panel.
I am usimg it, and I never dropped a phone in my life, would prefer to have scratch resistant glass instead.
Scratches are even more common.
