my XZ is not auto-switching from Wifi to Mobile Data

Arriving home my XZ switches our home wifi automatically on. Leaving home, XZ does not switch mobile data automatically on. Manually switching to other wifis does not connect, I have to force this to happen by rebooting the device. This means I am rebooting the device several times a day.

What is wrong?

settings>wifi>gear icon>auto network switch, is it on?

Do you have a VPN or firewall app?

was not on, switched it on and will report if makes a difference. It was on originally - might have switched off with Nougat installation.

no VPN or Firewall apps. Why? is that something I should have? Vodafone network so pretty sure there was some VPN setup originally (but not an app), but when you go to the VPN network settings, there is nothing there. I do have AVG Protection Pro antivirus app ...

VPN and firewall can prevent connectivity if the app isn't set correctly, that's all. You don't need one.

By default the setting you refer is turned off. 

Why you suggest to turn on it? And why by default is turned off (if you say the motivation)?
