Z1 Compact won't turn on

Hello, 

my phone died after some moisture got into it even through closed covers. After a few hours of it being turned off I tried the hairdryer to get the moisture out, afterwards I even tried hoover to **bleep** it out of the slip (which was a suggestion I found on one of the support forums) and that helped. I was able to turn my phone on again.

After a while the screen started to show some static, so I immediately turned it off again, pulled out the SIM and SD card and repeated the procedure with hairdryer and hoover, let it rest overnight and now it doesn't do anything at all. It vibrated three time at first when I tried the Power button+volume up, but now it doesn't even do that. I tried to plug it into the charger and let it charge for like 2 hrs. but the red LED is on and every 5 seconds it turns off for a moment and then it goes back again.

Does anyone know what's up?

hair dryer and vacuum = horrible torture for your phone. You just have to remove the SIM and SD cards > open all the covers > place it inside a bowl with rice for 24-48 hours 

But the only way to find out the extend of the damage is to open it, contact your local Xperia Care

Oh man that's a nightmare.

Now, patience is the key. You have to be really really patient.Trying to switch on the phone while water inside is what kills the phone and motherboard. Do not switch on your phone for 2-3 days and do what uli suggested.

If you don't want to use rice, then buy "Silica gel pouches", and put your phone in a closed container along with the pouches.

Let it rest for 2 days and then try to switch it on.

I really hope everything goes fine after that.

Here's what happened with my Xperia Arc S in 2012.

It fell in a bucket full of water, I immediately removed the battery of the phone ( for non removable battery phones, do a forced shutdown immediately ) and then let the phone dry at normal room temperature for 1 day to remove excess water. Then I put it in a container with silica gel as mentioned above for 2 days and later switched it on. It's working fine to this day .

I tried the bowl of rice over night and after that I wasn't even able to trun it on, it did work before though. Anyway I will try to let it rest some more and will start panicking after that:) Thank you

By the way, what happens when the water gets into the battery or into the motherboard? Couse that's what I think happened and I assume that would be beyond repair, right?

Water doesn't really enter the battery.

Whenever a phone is dropped into the water, the water remains at the peripheral for first few seconds/ minutes ( depending on the surroundings ofcourse ) There's always enough time ( if the person is at the drop sight) to switch the phone off before the water reaches the more sensitive components inside. The water may not even reach the deeper parts at all if the phone's given proper rest and appropriate moisture removal techniques are followed.

Now if the phone is switched off ( or isn't used ) when the water comes in contact with the motherboard ( or any other electrical component), there are chances that the phone will remain undamaged at all. ( Which happened in my case above. I didn't use it for days and let the moisture leave completely outta my phone) . What damages the phone for sure is "water + current passing through the electric component" which results in short circuit.

What most of the people do when their phone comes is contact with water is immediately trying to turn it on to see whether it's working fine or not 

Now that's completely opposite to what the must do and this action of theirs, results in a permanent damage. They might have had saved their phones if they waited and followed proper steps.

EDIT : Oh and if the motherboad is damaged (assuming it's only the motherboard), it would be replaced with a new one. But if it's a lot of components that received the damage, the service center guys may reject the repair of the phone if it becomes too uneconomical.

I guess time will tell now. I still have warranty as the guaranteed two years haven't passed yet, so do you think there's a chance they might repair it / replace the phone for a new one since the water has entered a "waterproof" phone when I'm sure all flaps were closed and I had it in the pool for like 2 minutes in 30cm depth?

How's your phone now ? 

I'm sorry but water damaged phones are not covered under warranty.

However, if there is a defect in the flaps, your phone should be repaired free of cost.

Ask them to do a vacuum test to see if those flaps are not perfect or deformed.

Unfotunately I have a similar problem and I think water damage shouldn't happen to a waterproof phone and should definetly be covered under warranty. Its a feature that has been advertized and I have paid for it. I find it very disturbing to read that this might not be covered...

Hi Del.

For a phone to remain completely waterproof, flaps need to be closed and ensured that they are in perfect condition. 

If you feel that the flaps were in closed position when your phone got water damaged, then go to service center and ask the guys to conduct a vacuum test on your phone. If they find a defect in your phone then it should be covered under warranty.
