Deleted e-mails still listed in Inbox

I have a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.  Until recently, when I deleted e-mails, they were erased from my inbox.  Lately, the message headers are still listed even after the messages have been deleted.  Clicking on the message opens nothing, because they have actually been deleted.  So why am I still seeing them listed in my inbox?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Strange,clear data for email app in settings-apps-all.Log in again.

If I do this won't I have to rebuild all my e-mail accounts from scratch?

No,you just have to login with your email and password.

I tried clearing the cache instead of clearing all data and that seems to have done the trick -- at least for now!
