Contacts list broken

In my Xperia Z3 Compact, Contacts list got crushed all of a sudden, meaning names in the list changed to some kind of codes and symbols. I didn't update or change anything. I tried to restart, didn't get better.

What are possible causes and it can be fixed? Thanks.

Hi @AD1510,

Welcome to the forum!

Does it look the same way while in safe mode?

Have you tried to manually update the filter in the contacts application?

  1. From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.
  2. Find and tap Contacts.
  3. Tap the menu button (three vertical dots), then tap Filter.
  4. Unmark the Contacts with phone numbers or Online contacts checkboxes.
  5. Under Display contacts, select each contact service or account that you want to edit, then make the desired changes. For example, select Google and mark the all checkboxes under Google if you want to view all your Google contacts in the Contacts app.

Have you tried clearing data for the app? Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Storage > Clear data. Then restart your phone.

Looks to me like you may have got an 'encryption problem'.

For some reason your phone has encrypted your contacts list. but does not decrypt when you open it.

Most likely the only way to get it back is to run a 'repair' on Sony Companion and then re-install an OLDER back-up from before this problem occured.

If you just take a back-up as is and re-install, same problem.
