Why does Norton AV interupt Family Tree Maker shut-down?

Just wondering. My wife, Anna, spends countless hours doing genealogy research and has a MASSIVE Family Tree Maker (FTM) file. Norton Anti Virus always seems to scan FTM when it shuts down - making the already long shut-down process even longer (well over a minute).

Anyone here know how to tell NAV to leave well alone?

I did find something about FTM on Symantec's website but they said they couldn't reproduce the problem!
