Yesterday I bought a Sony VAIO at auction. It came without a battery or an AC adaptor. I got a very good deal on the price (probably the only way I could afford one) and I am hoping I have not been sold a pig in a poke.
Could someone please advise me on the best method to get the machine up and running - Do I need to buy both an AC Adaptor and a battery(s). The battery cover is missing - is this normally a part of the battery(s) casing or should there be a separate cover?
If anyone feels I need to know more please feel free to advise me.
Thanks in anticipation.

A good place to start Maureen would be the following:

As far as I know the battery cover should be there but you can get up and running with just the AC power adaptor.
The Sony AC adapter for the S1XP costs around £94(!) so it's probably worth looking on eBay to save your self some money. As Rich912 said, you don't need a battery to get going, only the AC adapter. Just make sure that the laptop isn't missing any software, or indeed an operating system.
Hi. I have managed to source a reasonably priced pukka adaptor. While I am waiting for it to arrive can anyone help with sourcing an original software pack. I do not know yet what is on the hdd but I would feel more comfortable if I had genuine software backup.
You'd have to call VAIO Link

Thanks Kee-Lo. One unkind member of my family reckons that the creator of this must know me personally
Hehe
There is no battery cover on the S1.
Just click in the battary at the pack.
Problem is with the new VGN-XXX vaio's batteries got some chip in the battery itself. This tells your hardware of your battery is a SONY or not. If it isn't it will shut down your system.
So you'll only be able to use SONY orginal ones and like all VAIO items they don't come cheap.
Best bet is ebay or some other online auction house
Sony's meglomainia gets worrse.....
