Vaio S1XP and cd/dvd drive

Unfortunately my cd/dvd drive does not recognise cd and dvd's anymore. Using google I found a lot more occasions of this same error. For example:

It seems that a lot more people face the same problem. Is the hardware broken, error during manufacturing, software error or just simply bad luck?

If you go to Device Manager and expand CD/DVD ROM Drives, are there any errors or yellow warnings against your drive?

Everything is normal, no warnings or errors in the device manager.

Strange thing is that the drive seems to work as normal, only when you put in a cd or dvd and try to access it via explorer, the discs seem to be completely empty.
