I'm now under karmic (ubuntu 9.10) and it is still not working !!!
-- I've reported the bug on acpi (at that time under intrepid) now depreciated
-- then I've reported on hal, it won't be fixed because becoming depreciated...
-- instead of Hal, there is now devicekit and udev, they said first it is a kernel issue
-- I've reported to kernel, they say it is a platform driver issue or a bios issue
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13477
the bios is supported by sony, and sony is not supporting linux...
-- so I tried nvidia, no answer yet, but in the Internet, I've learned that every laptop manufacturer is managing backlight differently, so nvidia does not provide support for it, and the manufacturer is in charge of modifying and providing a working nvidia driver
but again sony does not support linux...
What to do now ?
The technical problem is that devicekit/udev need support in the kernel, on my laptop /sys/class/backlight is empty and that may be the problem...
I can change manually backlight with nvclock, so I though prehaps nvclock project could provide some kernel module ? I try to suggest it there (no answer yet)

It really a shame !
