Stamina mode

I bought a Vaio SZ1M/B 4 days ago and I'm rather pleased with it

I just have one question about the stamina mode: what is it exactly? I mean, I know it helps to save battery but is it hardware or software? I'm not sure to understand how it works?
I ask this question because I'm running linux on my computer and knowing more about the stamina mode would help me to have it running under linux (hopefully )

Thank you very much Rich for the quick answer and for the link: it's exactly what I needed
I was wondering why linux found 2 graphic chipsets while I was only aware of one (the nvidia one). Now it's clearer
