Sony Vaio PCV-RX504 cannot boot windows xp home

Suddenly my PC cannot boot Windows XP Home anymore (in safe mode it hangs on mup.sys, but various forums report that mup.sys is not the issue)

Reinstalling the PC via the recovery cd's will work only if you press F5 during the message "Press F6 if scsi, raid, drivers etc." is displayed.

Later you have to confirm that the vaio is a pc with c-step I-486. Only then recovery will take place. After the 3rd CD, the pc wants to reboot.

Directly after that the PC hangs (rebooting again in safe mode shows it hangs at mup.sys). Disabling mup.sys makes that the vaio hangs on the previous driver... indicating that it is the next driver that is causing the problem.

When writing the boot process to a log file, nothing is visible cause the vaio crashes before writing to the log file.

This problem is not caused by a virus (this has been checked), nor are there any faulty components (installing a different OS shows no problems).

I need some help to solve this (it already took me several days now)

Do you have any other clients running like Novel?

No I don't have novell clients running. It's a clean install (Factory default)

Thanks for the advise. Everything that can be possibly found on internet i've tried myself. i.e.
1. checked hardware
2. Switched memory from one stick to another
3. disabled mup.sys (after that the PC hangs on another driver (the one before mup.sys, doesn't matter which one that is.... indicating that it is the driver loaded after mup.sys causing the pc to hang)
4. Re-install using recovery disks/cd's
5. flashing bios (=not possible due to no bios files available for Asus/Sony OEM motherboards)
6. Enabling ACPI in bios (not possible, no such feature)
7. etc., etc.

I'm desperate....

If it's in it's first 12 months I would ask Sony to take a look.

That's exactly the problem.... It's in it's 18th month....
