S1XP very ill - please help!

Here's a rundown:

In April, fan started to make a buzzing noise after the laptop has been on for a while. Loudness changes with laptop tilt, can get pretty damn loud

1) Dropped laptop from my lap when playing a game once. The game freezed, and kept freezing after fresh installs.

2) Then noticed some files would freeze when transferring them, had crc errors when unzipping files.

3) Experienced some blue screens with kernal data errors or something...

Ran scan disk on both C and D drives, seemed to solve the problem.

Then a few weeks later had a blue screen. Also had another a few days ago.

From 2 days ago, whenever I restart the PC, I get a smart message saying that there is an imminent hard drive failure, and to back up my data!
-------------
So, I am guessing I have a broken fan and in need of a new hard drive, I don't know if the problems are related? The bottom of it does get quite hot when its been working hard.

Is it relatively straight forward to replace a fan and hard drive. I've opened up the laptop before had a litle poke around with the fan, couldn't really see anything that it was catching on.

Really not happy, the laptop is only 18 months old and cost a lotta dosh!

Thanks in advance!

The hard disk will definately need replacing, but before you rush to get a new fan have you tried cleaning it with compressed air? It could be just a case of a bit of dust that needs removing.

You need to get a new harddrive. The clicking sound is probably your harddrive. Back up any important files now.

Hope you still have some warranty on it, SONY can be expensive. Be sure to get your memory stick out of the slot before you send it to them (if you got one). I lost mine when I sent my S1 in for repair.

You can also repair it yourself but you'll need to open your notebook, how it is done you can read in the following link

It's one of the best vaio forums out there.

Good luck.

Hi CasterTroy2,

As you are thinking of replacing your hard drive why not put in a 7200 speed drive, something similar to this
