2 and a half year ago I bought a FX705 for my elder daughter when she began her study. Some months ago a FX805 for my younger daugther when she started at highschool. The idea was to buy a quality product that might serve for several years. I always was afraid to buy no name products because of bad quality.
The first problems with FX705 came already during the 2nd year, but my daughter found no time to contact the service. The notebook went off without any error - display froozen - and had to be started new.
In January '05 I sent the notebook to Sony service in Berlin with a clear failure description. But they only found the defect sector at HDD but not the problem. They would have changed the 30 GB HDD for 378 ¿. I decided to pay 78 ¿ to the "service" for not finding the real failure, not let change the HDD and sell the defect notebook at ebay.
When I searched at ebay I found another 2 FX705 notebooks with the same problem. It seems to be not only the problem of my notebook, it seems to be a general quality problem of Sony.
Last Sunday my younger daughter mailed a problem with her FX805. Her notebook gives sometimes a bad sound and turns off. Also the USB doesn't work all times. So I will sell it same way as the FX705 because it's out of garantuee period.
It's a bit expensive experience. I bought the FX705 for 2300¿ and got with a little luck 300¿ at ebay. For about 70¿ per month you can lease a notebook without any risk.
Has anybody better experiences with Sony notebooks and Sony service?
Gerald
PS: Excuse my bad English. I've learned it at school some years ago and have not often chances to use English language.
That's a terrible thing, charging nearly ¿400 for a new hard disk, you would have been better off seeing one of the local computer repair stores, they would have done that for you for a lot less.
It amazes me how much Sony will charge people just to look, it's a disgrace, really it is!
Thank god I have had a good experience with Sony (touches wood)
yeah (touches wood) if its out of warranty, dont bother send to sony.
Their prices are just
Hello Kee-Lo,
changing the HDD in a local computer store for a better price wouldn't have been the problem. The problem for the people there was to diagnose why the notebook shut down (frooze) without any error message. The Sony "Service" did't find the cause and without a repair it was useless changing the HDD. They would have to order spare parts from Sony, also no problem. But if changing parts wouldn't be successful the have no use for theese special parts.
So I decided not to invest any single ¿ in this notebook and bring the story to an end.
Much regards
Gerald
Ah I see
Some local stores do specialise with VAIO.
Sad end to a sad story.
Hope you have better luck
