connecting laptop to tv

i am trying to connect my vaio fw21m to my samsung 40` tv via a vga cable but am getting no where, my tv wont even go to pc screen can anybody help

I presume you've tried the Fn and F6 (I think) key to change the output from laptop screen to TV!
