My BDP-S780 just refuses to connect to internet

Hi,

I had this issue from the beginning (October 2011).

Just to screen some things out:

I tried factory resetting the Sony several times, I looked into my Routers Setting (Netgear ProSafe FVX538), rebooted the Router. There was absolutey no setting on the router that could deny a connection or be somehow suspicious of acting as a cause for that problem. I connected to my Wireless Router => same behaviour: network is fine - internet connection: NO!

Just for the records: i have 25 devices in my network (1 Router, 2 Wireless routers, 3 switches, laptops, tv, xbox, macbook pros, NAS drives, Sonos Music System, Mobile handsets ...). Every single device was embedded perfectly into the network, is being identified by its MAC Adress and managed just perfectly by my netgear router. Only the Sony device is screwing things up and it simply DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE!!!

After talking several times to the Sony support - which honestly gave me some hard time since these guys automatically concentrated on ANY other possible cause but never the Sony device itself - i downloaded the new firmware from the website, burned the image to a dvd and flashed the new firmware to the device.

After that this issue still remained.

And I had enough of dealing with it.

Now - some months later - i fire up the bluray player and one minute later it gives me a note that a new firmware is available. So i immediately go to the network update and the result is again this annoying screen stating that the gateway wouldnt be responding. A network test states that my network is setup correctly but i simply have no connection to the internet.

But this is just NOT TRUE. Because if I go to the Video section and select one of the (german) content providers like Tagesschau, Pro 7, Sat 1 or just youtube, I receive the newest video and have them streamed to my Bluray Player just as if nothing ever was wrong. So if I then go back to network update ... again: gateway not responding. This is really annoying and after some short research that seems to be an issue with many Sony Bluray players. And if these devices are simply not capable of doing all this stuff then these devices should be returned instead of RMA´d.

Any suggestions?

Hi

I'd get it tested out by your local service centre to see if they can recreate the issue - strange indeed that everying else is working but the Blu-ray player isn't. Whilst issue are incredibly frustrating and can arise, bear in mind we have millions of these devices connected globally and the number of issues that arise around problems with connections are tiny when compared to the install base, which wouldn't indicate a widespread problem.

Alot of the time, (although probably not in your case) it can be finger trouble and setup incorrect, sometimes there is a problem with the individual bit of kit, sometimes there are localised network problems, sometimes in how the ISP deals with content - there are a wonderful amount of variables! Generally when its a widespread issue, we'll see a massive volume of postings on the boards here within a very short spate of time.

So its important to try and get the service centre to replicate the issue so they can try and understand where it is..

Hope this helps
