Red light on top LH corner next to screen side camera

Hi,

I have had a couple of issues with my Xperia L, sometimes the alarm doesn't sound or only sounds as vibrate when it is set to sound even if on silent.

Second, there is a tiny red light above the screen on the top left hand side next to the "selfie" camera, is there a reason for this to be on?  Someone told me that it is possible to hack into someone's phone and film them from their camera.  It sounds a bit far fetched but.... what is this red light for please.

That's the proximity sensor and ambient light sensor
