SVR-HDT500 update issue

My hdt500 starting playing up about a month ago and its taken me ages to get round to trying to fix it. It started freezing and then I had a message come up with "data error occurred. Try repair disk or format disk". tried all this with no luck. contacted Sony themselves and they emailed me a link to a software update        4.21 r8585. I downloaded as per instructions and tried to update box but it just wont have it. When I power the box on it asks for screen size then wants to start scanning for channels. I can stop that then go into the system menu and get all the way to the update by usb. As soon as i press the ok button a message comes up with "no USB

Its really fustrating me know as i cant use the box at all.

Can anyone help as i really dont want to send it back to sony

I have a somewhat similar problem with  the SVR-HDT500 which I posted about on 19 Dec 2012. Fortunately my machine is actually working quite well apart from mysteriously switching itself on and off automatically during the night or morning. I too would like to update by USB to the latest (July 2011) firmware which I have repeatedly downloaded, unzipped and transferred to various USB sticks. But when I get to the final stage of doing the update  I always, and repeatedly, get a message saying "Invalid Updates. Check update files". Sony have not been terribly helpful and all their telephone help line could suggest is returning the machine to them for the firmware update which I, like you, am reluctant to do. Sony, so far, have not responded personally to my requests for advice and help via their online support. All I get is automated responses which are not at all helpful.

My sony SVR HDT500 (14 months old) has also been playing up of late.  Will do a break in recording for no apparent reason, and is currently not switching off a recording at the end!  Hence some recordings of 20 hours until i can manually cancel the recording.  Any ideas for solution? I'm not aware of updates and zipped/unzipped files - is there something i should be doing?

hope someone can help!
