I've been given a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W190.
It has a USB cable but no plug for the mains electricity, can I charge the battery through my laptop or do I need a mains plug?
If I can use the USB can someone tell me how?

Hi redbreadvan and welcome.
You can download the manual from here: -
http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4143378131.pdf
The camera should have come with its own stand alone battery charger BC-CSKA (Page 12) and this is the only method shown in the manual for charging the camera battery.
You cannot charge the battery on this model using the USB or the DC-IN sockets - so you will need to buy a charger if you can't get it from the previous owner. Genuine Sony Chargers cost about £20: -
But you can find cheaper, third party chargers: -

Hi Blencogo
Thanks for that - I was given the instructions when I got the camera - I hoped that maybe there was a way of setting the connection to charge it, no charge plug but it seemed rude to look a gift horse in the mouth!
Nice tip on the chargers!
