Can't download photos from DSC-HX90V to computer

Suddenly my HX90V won't transfer photos to my tower computer.
I plug it in, switch on and wait for the computer screen to show the black screen with the menu to transfer new photos etc but nothing happens.
I have a DSC WX-350 and an ILCE 5000 which use the same lead and tried them and it's the same problem
Maybe there's a fault in the lead but it does show the camera screen when plugged in and if I turn off the lead supply the camera opens up to normal picture taking mode so figure there is a definite link with the lead.
I've tried plugging the same lead and camera into a laptop and same problem there
I'm non techie so I'm sorry if I'm using the wrong lingo.
Is there some computer setting that has maybe got changed?
If it's thought the fault must be in the lead can you tell me exactly what name and specification to order please?
I have the usual Home ? software installed but don't use it and always bypass it to get my pictures directly into the computer.
Hope somebody can help - many thanks

Forgot to say - I have Windows 10.
And I tried the lead in another USB socket without success.
Thanks

I have a WX350 still camera and I have suddenly started having this problem too. I get a message saying the device has not been recognised, but nothing has happened to the camera or the lead. Camera works fine and shows the images on its screen, but it won't connect with my tower PC any more. Windows 7.

Hi @psiclops,

well, hard to say from the distance, however, as in your case three different cameras are showing the same problem I'd rather say that something has changed on your PC or that there's something wrong with the lead (e.g. a broken or dirty contact).

However, maybe some Windows update or automatical USB port driver update is causing the trouble but as three different cameras are showing the same problem I'd say that there's something wrong with the lead. Using the same lead on different hardware led to the same trouble obviously so it's rather unlikely that the problem has got to do with the system's software. Just try a different lead in order to narrow down the possible causes.

Anyhow I'd suggest to use a card reader for copying your pictures. They normally are way faster than copying files from a connected camera. I'm afraid that the process will not start automatically in this case.

@Bandoodle:

That all may be valid for you as well, except that you've got the problem with one camera "only".

Cheers

Hi Dark Frame
Thanks so much for your input
You're right it was something changed on the computer.
Somebody suggest I check autoplay and I found it was on the wrong setting - no idea how that happened.
Anyway now autoplay is restored all is well again.
Thanks for responding

thanks a lot for sharing your solution! That's, by the way, something I'd never have thought of... Hopefully I do remember that in case of similar requests.

Thanks again!

Cheers
