Scan for channels

Cannot find how to scan for channels on my Bravia TV using wifi only. Everywhere I search for help talks of inserting an aerial which I cannot use. Surely shouldn't be this dificult.

Your TV should have an input for an aerial for Freeview channels and an input for satellite/ cable services.

Why can't you use an aerial?

Using WiFi you can sign up for iPlayer, ITV X, All4, My 5 and other streaming services by downloading apps

or using the built in apps on your TV.

Adding to @daveyh64‘s response, can you please give the model of your TV?

With earlier Android sets, you may experience insurmountable difficulties using the built-in apps without an aerial having ever been connected, for which we usually recommend using a Roku Express or Amazon Firestick in one of your HDMI inputs, to add this capability to the TV.

Thanks for reply.

It's a new Bravia KD32W800.

I was of the belief (wrongly it seems) all of Freeview Play channels could be picked up using wifi only.

Would the plug ins you suggest give me this facility ?

I really don't wont to use an aerial.

Hi @Meldrew1

If you are looking for a full programme guide with all the bells and whistles over WiFi only then your options are very limited and will cost you. One such solution is Sky Stream (currently £26 a month).

Another option would be to use the YouView-based BT Pro box that you can get if you subscribe to BT Broadband and additionally to BT TV. But even this has limitations, and would probably cost you more than Sky Stream.

Not all the broadcaster apps on Sony TVs will allow you to watch live channels over the internet, just the on demand stuff. But the broadcaster apps on Firesticks and Roku devices do provide this.

However, it’s a bit clunky, as you have to keep switching players when you want to ‘switch channels’. And there are a lot of Freeview channels that are broadcast only, and not streamed anywhere.

Our utility room didn’t have a TV point, and we have to use a TV distribution system, so we tried a TV in there, to be used via the player apps over the internet. But we really couldn’t get on with it, so we got a TV installer to drill through the wall and run a cable to the TV point in that room. Much better.

I’m sure Freeview over the internet is close, but it isn’t here yet 😢
