KD-43X75WL TOSLINK optical audio level volume control using remote?

KD-43X75WL: How can I configure the audio settings to adjust the TOSLINK optical audio using the remote control volume and mute button?

I have some Dynaudio speakers which are currently connected on TOSLINK.

Currently the volume can only be set using the in the audio control panel, but it's a pain to pop up the control panel and go through multiple menu entries to set the volume rather than using the volume/mute buttons on the remote.

I see some users here on the forum claiming that it's technically impossible to change the volume on TOSLINK, but it can be done with the level in the control panel also it worked fine with my old "TV" which was simply running on a chromebox.

What should the settings of the audio controls in the control panel be set to in order to achieve this?

If not can USB connected sound interfaces be configured so they can be controlled using the remote?

Unfortunately no TV of any brand can control the volume of an audio system connected via toslink, even if I don't know the actual change in the flow from setting the level of digital audio output to dinamically set the volume via the remote.

For the USB connection you may try if the TV recognize it, but I doubt that the needed driver are installed on TVs

How can you explain that I can change the audio level of the TOSLINK connected speakers using the Sony remote which came with the TV?

It's just very cumbersome. This is what I have to do:

  • Click the wrench button on the remote
  • Select Settings
  • Select Display & Sound
  • Select Audio Output
  • (Note that current Digital audio out is set to PCM)
  • Click Digital audio out volume
  • Use the "wheel" to adjust the bar to a level between 0 and 100.

This will change the volume of the speakers.

However, it's very cumbersome. Nothing happens to the audio level when I use the volume up, down or mute on the remote.

Is there a way to make the volume controls do whatever the sequence of menu selections is doing above?

As I mentioned initially this worked fine on my old "TV". The same Dynaudio speakers where connected to the ChromeBox and I could change the volume using the volume up/down and mute buttons.

Hi @d.signer

The optical out is a fixed volume level set by the procedure you have outlined. This is by design, to allow the TV speakers to be set to a different volume to the optical out. For example I have a Phonak TV Connector connected to the optical out so I can listen direct to my hearing aids. The TV speaker volume can be adjusted to suit everyone else in the room. The optical output can not be associated with the remote volume buttons.

I have 3 choices to change my hearing aids volume, TV (your procedure, set to 100%), on the TV Connector and usually using the Phonak App. Sorry about the detail, but it may be of interest to other community members.

It's a poor design or design flaw. There could be an option to do one or the other, either fixed audio output level on the system audio output (TOSLINK/PCM) or it could be controlled by the remote.

Good luck waiting for any tv brand to create a new feature on such an old protocol. Searching for an answer to your question on the internet., the volume on spdif protocol can be adjusted only when encoding the analogue source (that should be the setting you are using) or when decoding to analogue on the receiver side (via a volume ***** or whatever you have on your expensive speaker). Nothing on the digital Flow. This is also the same on hdmi arc connection but in that case the hdmi protocol support sending the volume control from the tv remote to the receiving device via the same cable. But i assume your speakers do not support it

There is no need to create a new feature of the protocol. It's already there. The only feature required would be a button in the menu saying that the output level should be fixed (like today) or controlled by the remote and in the latter case it would be updated by the remote directly rather than using the volume level bar on the screen.

Please read what I wrote above. It works to change the audio level from the TV over the TOSLINK, it's just very cumbersome to do it.

There is no other connection between the TV and my speaker system than the TOSLINK. The volume level setting is inbound and part of the TOSLINK/PCM signal bitstream and is currently controlled only by the TV. I can even change the volume bar level using my Bluetooth mouse which would rule out any out of band IR control.

I can also connect the speaker system to my PC using TOSLINK only and control the volume level of the speakers using my mouse or the volume up/down/mute keys on the keyboard.

As each speaker has a DAC and amplifier the actual physical amplfication is of course done there. But the level information in embedded in the TOSLINK bistream from the TV. The speaker system does not have a HDMI interface, only TOSLINK and USB for digital.
