I think I better tell you the whole story it may make more sense then. The initial 1tb external drive worked fine for years. Then one day it refused to work with timer record. I tried to record manually and that still worked and more importantly I could still play the recordings. I contacted Sony who told me to copy all of the information from the hard drive to my pc and then re format the external drive on the tv. As I did not have enough space on my pc hard drive i bought another external drive and copied all the information to that. I did as requested and re formatted the external drive with the tv. It doesn't give you an option as far as format goes it is just fat 32. After doing that I sat for hours transferring everything back to the original external drive. Once that was done i connected it back up to the tv but it said there was no hard drive connected. I tried the new external drive which i copied the information to

but it said there was no recordings. Even though the new drive was also formatted to fat 32.So I had lost nearly half a terabyte of recordings. I knew it was a bad idea to in effect wipe the original but i was assured that once i copied the information back it would be ok. Having lost everything I decided to try

recording on the new hard drive and repeat the process of copying it to the pc then re formatted the drive (Fat 32) and copying it back to the newly formatted drive to see what happened. It said no recordings were on the hard drive. I have read somewhere recently when i was trying to work out why this happened that the file system that Sony use is encrypted so cannot be copied to a pc or another external drive. I don't know if this is the case but if it is and I had been told this I could have left the original drive as it was so that i could still watch the recordings and use a second drive for timer recordings instead of wasting hours messing about copying it only to find that I was worse off than when i started. At least before they told me to copy everything I could at least watch the recordings. The new drive works fine now I have deleted the information that i copied onto it but I am just really annoyed that they told me to copy the information in the first place especially if what i have read is correct and the file system used by Sony cannot be copied. Hope this makes sense now.

Our TV (KDL46ex701) cannot find the external hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex STAA250200) when linked via USB. The hard drive supports connection via TV, but the TV does not respond at all to this.

Question no 1: Does the TV support hard drives (it should work as it responds to a USB memory stick)?

Question no 2: How do we make it work?

Hi,

You may find this a format issue. My understanding is that your telly will only recognize FAT32 (memory stick format) while your external hard-drive is formatted for NTFS. I would look at this for further information:

http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/formatting-external-hard-drive-to-fat-32/

Thanks,

I have the KDL-46EX402 and the same problem. External hard drive makes a beep every 18 seconds. FAT32 also does not helped. The fact is that TV has been able to find data on your hard drive. If the hard drive was NTFS format, I got a moment to watch a movie preview. I think also that it is a power problem.

Try formatting to (less than) 32GB FAT. This isn't a satisfactory solution but so far it's the only way I've got my BDV E370 to see any external drives.

Also if you create multiple partitions, I think it'll only see the first.

The TV supports external HDD discs. Only FAT32 file system, not partitioned. Since you are using 2.5” HDD it needs to be supplied with power from the TV USB port so try using a shorter cable. When longer USB cable is used the power supply may not get to the HDD.

On my KDL-46HX753 there are 2 USB ports, only one of which will support an external drive for recording off air. It matters not a jot what format the drive is as it will reformat it. Had no problems with it's performance (some niggly aspects regarding the TVs software when navigating the recorded programmes but otherwise fine).

Now, what is an hitherto unsolved problem is exactly how the drive (320Gig) is formatted. It is not readable on any pc/laptop OS I have. Indeed, if I connect it to a computer it thinks the drive is unformatted and offers to reformat it.

If anyone has any ideas I would be eternally grateful.

Merry Christmas

Hi there

If you are trying to get the recordings off the HDD onto a PC - you cant (you can "see" the HDD via Linux though). However, if you want to reclaim that HDD back, it needs to be reformatted

Cheers

Hi there

I think i know why you do not have the options to Register HDD. Do you have YouView active by any chance? If so, this will need to be disabled as you cannot use HDD Recording in YouView Mode.

To disable YouView

Press [Home] button on the remote control

Go to 'Settings'

Go to 'Channel Setup'

Go to 'YouView Setup'

Select 'Disable YouView'

Select 'Yes' to confirm

Success!
Check the following.
HDD is at least 100 GB
HDD is formatted only with FAT32
HDD's first partition is the only one that will be recognised. Extra partitions are not required.

Then check your Sony Bravia's USB sockets.
One (nearest screen) is labelled HDD REC. Use this one. The other USB socket will not power your HDD.

Then go to Settings | System Settings | Set-up | Recording Set-up | HDD Registration

I am having a similar problem. I had an external hard drive on my Sony kdl 42 w653 a tv. I started having problems when setting it for timer record, It wouldn't switch on. Recording manually was fine though. I made the mistake of contacting sony who told me to back up

the information on the hard drive to a pc and then re format the hard drive on the tv and then copy the files back to it. I did this but it said no hard drive was connected. I bought a new hard drive and tried that to see what happened and it worked fine. So i tried to copy the files off the new hard drive and re format it to see what happened. When i copied the files back to the hard drive. Now it also says no hard drive connected. After re formatting it and copying the files back again it says no recordings on hard drive. I think could be something to do with the encryption. If so why did they tell me back the information up to a pc when they must have known that after that it wouldn't be able to be accessed by the tv?

Hi zoonie1, I think this isn't related to the TV, what formats did you try?

Did formatting it to FAT32 solve it for you, or do you still face the same issue?
