topic My Vaio Experience... in PCs & Accessories

Right so 4 months ago I got my brand new Sony Vaio VGN-S5XP/B and the moment I set had finished setting up windows it goes on and then I'm invaded by useless programs and preinstalled junk such as the Yahoo toolbar.

Lately my Vaio has been running extremely slowly so I digged out my recovery discs and did a fresh pre-install of both partitions, Windows, and also the Vaio recovery of software.

Firstly it was extremely simple and didn't take that long in all fairness after I had backed up all my data on my external hard disc drive. So praise where it is due, well done Vaio for creating an extremely user-friendly way of recovering their equipment to its original state. Having also set-up a refurbished VGN-S4XP/B for my father it was the same as that so even simpler for myself.

Secondly, though, I forgot how much junk a Vaio has pre-installed, its ridiculous. If I wanted a toolbar from a search engine, which I for one most certainly do not! But if I did I would go and find the one that would best suit my needs and download and install it myself. Its appaling that I bought a £1600 piece of equipment only to remember how much rubbish was preinstalled 😞

Thirdly, the amount of that pre-installed software which is actually useable in the long term without the total bill totaling the £2000 mark, the Microsoft Office 2003 Small Business Edition, now I was expecting a nice full OEM version of Microsoft Office, but no, Vaio only install a pathetic 90 day trial version. Great, so I can use the software for 90 days, then who cares about the customer, they can go and pay Microsoft for the software. Also I donot personally like the way Microsoft XP Professional did not come with its on install discs.. instead its on a recovery partition which you have to go through.

Fourthly, on my screen I either have, a. dead pixels, or b. a scratch of roughly 4mm. Now personally I am not sure but its always been their since day one, and after seeing the support offered to other members I felt I would save myself the pain and troubles and try and ignore it. Well as I am now describing my Vaio life I thought I may as well mention it also.

Fifthly, after saying all this, it makes me feel no better, because I know that nothing will be done as Vaio are making too much of a profit from the pre-installed rubbish and will no doubt never remove them for the sake of the customer. They also in my opinion will never send us our OEM Windows installs and will remain on a seperate partition as that enables them to re-install all the junk when you re-install Windows 😞

p.s. My keys are also slowly becoming less like they should be and have faded, also certain keys such as my "Q" key, has a strange peeling effect at the bottom slope off the key.

Sorry for writing all that, just thought I would share my experience a few months in whilst waiting for the Windows Updates and the un-installation of pre-installed software.
