VAIO VGN-A417M - wireless network card problem

Hi everybody,

I have a problem with my built in wireless network card as it does not want to connect to my wireless router any more. In fact it cannot get an IP from the router which seems to work fine because another laptop is connected wirelessly to it and works fine. The problem appeared just recently and I have no idea how to resolve it.
If anybody know what to do, please help.

Have you hard rebooted the router?

Hi masterix and welcome,

Odd that it should just stop working - you could try a System Restore to a time when it was OK:-

Start>>Run>>type 'msinfo32' and enter.
Click on 'Tools'>>System Restore
Pick the most recent available date when your wireless was last working.

You could also check that your Vaio is set to receive an IP address automatically:-

Start>>Control Panel>>Network Connections
Is your wireless network shown? Is it Enabled & Connected?
If it is, Right-Click on it>>Properties
Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Properties.
Check that 'Obtain IP address automatically' is checked.
Click on 'Advanced' - is DHCP enabled?
Click on WINS - select 'Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
OK, OK, Close and re-boot.

Run 'cmd'
Type 'ipconfig' and enter.
What is your IP address and your Default Gateway?

As I said, there is another laptop communicating with the router wirelessly just fine. I don't think it's the router's problem.
And yes, I rebooted the router and I also restarted my vaio...

Please check the security setting for your router , whether pre shared key or something like that , to do that use ethernet cable to connect your router to connect first.

Hi everybody,
You guys might not believe what I found out. At least I didn't think that somethink like this may happen.
I checked the router settings again (but this time precisely) and I discovered the MAC address of my vaio's wireless network card in place of the router's WAN MAC address.
I cloned it back with the right one, restarted router and vaio and it works just fine. Now it's obvious why wireless card could not get an IP.
I was trying to upgrade firmware of my router - unsuccessfully - maybe that is when it happened. Next time I'll switch off wireless before upgrading...

My apologies to Kee-Lo - it was a router problem.
