Hi there,

My friends M1 is having problems....when the mains power is switched on the fans start up (full speed) and the orange "ON" switch is allready lit up but it will not boot.

It's as if it's stuck in this state, it has been unplugged for an hour or two, then switched back on only to return to being "frozen".

Any help or ideas would be appreciated,

Si

Babysmile Wrote:

erm.. have u check da RAM, Processor those stuff? might be harsh to open the casing but if u know how to do it, give a try..

I'd normally advise against this but as its out of warranty the it can't hurt to have a look. Check the power supply feeds to the motherboard are not loose. Also check the CPU fan (if you can see that) is spinning correctly and at speed. Be very careful here operating the computer with the power on and the casing removed, its all low voltage except the power supply.

Reseat your memory modules (normally you can get to these under a plastic flap on the rear or underside of the machine), get some compressed air to clean the slots, then find a pencil eraser and rub along the gold contacts with the eraser. Never use your fingers though because that leaves a film of oil over the contacts which is not easy to remove afterwards. Also ensure you are static free, a single static shock will ruin a memory module or the computer or even both :S

Try restarting the computer now, it may bounce back but a dead memory module will stop the computer from even starting correctly. Listen out for any odd beep patterns from the computer at startup, if you hear any tell us what they are, so we can help resolve it for you.

Best of luck - I hope your PC will work after this.

Eurrrr, maybe something a bit more easy, but also worth a check : Is there besides the mouse any other USB or PCMCIA device attached? If yes, please remove it and try again...
