As an edit to my own post: The control panel is telling me that it is using the High Definition Audio Device. I have tried disabling it and rebooting to re-install it but the problem remains the same. The Sony Assist program is telling me that everything is working fine. Mmmmm.

Hi, I have a VPCEH1J1E laptop and I replaced the HDD, loaded up all the drivers and then upgraded to Windows 10. It all worked fine but I have just noticed that when I plug in my external speakers the sound continues from the internal speakers and there is no sound from the external ones. The same problem occurs with my headphones.

I would appreciate any advice about fixing this.

Thanks

Another edit to my own post: Via control panel sound, I selected the headphones to be the default device rather than the speakers. The internal speakers fell silent and when I plugged in the external speakers they worked. Hooray. When I unplugged the external speakers again, the internal speakers remained silent. Shouldn't the internal speakers kick in here?

Thanks.
